We named our Tuareg Leather chests after the endogamous cast within the Tuareg community, who make them: Inadan. Each box sold by Knotty Scarves is a special order. We requested the design and monitored each step of the production process and since they were extremely hard to ship by boat ( they need to be handled with care), they were all shipped by plane and delivered to us within three days. These are bigger and more elaborated chest, the one given to a bride before her wedding. They are made in leather to carry valuable and especially to survive the long treks through the Saharan desert. They are “handmade”, there are literally no machines involved, as a worker explained to us: As long as the sun shines and the air is breathable, we could make trunk from anywhere!
For the longest, Knotty Scarves’ intention was to introduce to our followers' unparalleled traditional craft from different parts of the world, but mainly from West Africa and Kashmir.
Our articles are always handmade by master craftsmen, men and women who are often the last of their kind since almost no one is willing to perpetuate their trade. They work in teams and each team member is assigned a specific task. The work is incredibly tedious and neither local or tourists would buy them for different reasons. The tourists are mostly interested in low priced exotic present and are not willing to spend on items that are often very expensive to ship. The locals are interested in manufactured good from the orient. They are often exclusively designed for the African market and are very cheap.
When traveling in Senegal, we often came back with presents for friends and family and they were always stunned by the beauty and uniqueness of the things we brought back.
The Tuareg chest for sale here today is already sold! It was a special order from the sweetest lady there is, but more are on the way.
